    HONDA Civic(6)-成長:4代Grand Civic 1987年-1991年

80-90年代可說是HONDA在F1車壇上最發光發亮的時間,靠著車神洗拿的努力,成功地讓全球驚覺HONDA引擎技術的厲害,當然這種新技術,首推源自賽車科技的VTEC。

第4代Grand Civic則是將HONDA引擎科技推向世界車壇巔峰的一個世代,首先是Grand Civic已經全車系16氣門化,以4缸引擎來說,就是每一汽缸分別擁有2個進排氣氣門,所以在效率上能夠控制得很好。

但是多氣門設計導致的低引擎轉速出力不足的先天困擾,HONDA則是將運用在賽車引擎上的VTEC科技首先導入量產引擎,第一具配置有VTEC科技的引擎就是SOHC設計1.6升、出力125hp的D16A,裝置在4代3門Si車款上與初期的CRX車款,隨後VTEC技術更轉移到DOHC設計的ZC引擎上成為第1代B16A引擎,使得1.6升排氣量的NA引擎能夠擁有160hp的超高輸出。

VTEC科技使得HONDA成為引擎科技的領導之一,同時HONDA也是第一個將氣門揚程可變與正時科技量產的車廠。另外一項關於Civic的經典特質就是在底盤設計方面,HONDA已經將Accord與Prelude車型上的前後雙A臂設計移植到Grand Civic車型上,使得Civic擁有同級車中無法比擬的操控性能。
