2005年中，在現行新八代Civic問世前，HONDA率先發表了全新世代的1.8升引擎，運用大量全新引擎科技，使Civic於動力層面上，同樣超越原有規格。

這具全新八代Civic所使用的主力引擎，原廠代號為R18A1，排氣量為1799cc，正好介於1800cc稅賦級距之內，引擎本體採用高強度鋁合金鑄造而成，並進行高原式塘磨處理，再配合離子蒸鍍處理活塞環，提升缸內的整體平整度，降低機件運轉的摩擦力，曲軸也採鍛造製成，並經過高精密的平衡措施，讓引擎運轉更為平順。

此外，該具引擎也同時擁有i-VTEC系統、IMRC可變進氣歧管、線傳油門以及ETC電子節氣門等引擎科技，不僅擁有水準之上的140hp/6300rpm最大馬力，與17.7kgm/4300rpm最大扭力，更近一步在油耗與排污上有更佳的表現。

而該具引擎於1000~3500rpm間，以及三檔以上檔位，具有獨特的經濟節能運轉模式，利用i-VTEC之可變進氣揚程與正時機制，於該模式下，延長進氣時間，並將ETC電子節流閥全開，同時於延遲關閉進汽門正時，使前一引擎循環未燃燒完全的油氣，在回到進氣岐管中，再於下一次進氣行程中，再將油氣導入，如此一來將可使油氣完全燃燒，節省油料。

這就是為何全新Civic的1.8升車型，可以有平均每公升燃油行駛15.5公里，高速行駛20.71公里的驚人低油耗表現。

日昨提到，在兩天的試駕過程中，大部份的路程都是高速路段，即使是雙線的鄉間小道，大夥也鲜少輕踩油門，而全新Civic憑藉著順暢且優於相近級距車款的動力輸出，無論是起步加速或再加速超車，表現都於同預期般輕快順暢，雖然加速度未如2.0升車型敏捷，不過對於一般的消費者而言，以相當夠用，兩天的試駕下來，在許多路段平均時速都在130km/h左右，甚至是150km/h以上，已超過一般駕駛狀態甚多，因此一向以優異動能著稱的Civic，在全新一代車款上，同樣有著一脈相承的傳統。

至於在變速系統方面，Civic全車系皆撘載五速自排變速箱，1.8升頂級車型與2.0升車型則附有Paddle Shift方向盤後置式換檔機制，不僅換檔迅速，在退檔時會同步作補油動作，增添了些與的競技氣息，而為具有Paddle Shift方向盤後置式換檔機制的車型，雖然失去一些駕駛樂趣，不過順暢的表現同樣令人滿意。
