當1987年第四代Civic大改款之際,HONDA推出Ballade Sport CR-X的後繼車CR-X,為了提升操控靈活性,軸距從2500mm縮短為2300mm,3800×1675×1270mm的車身尺碼比起第四代Civic的3995×1680×1335mm要來得小,但更為流線的造型卻深受年輕人喜愛。另外第一代2+2的座椅配置,到了第二代則以雙座為訴求,這種純跑車的定位使得CR-X得以和NISSAN Pulsar、TOYOTA Levin相抗衡。

內裝與Civic相比充滿戰鬥氣息,雖然不少零組件共用,但在重新設計後呈現截然不同風格,尤其兩張類桶型賽車座椅更增添熱血指數。正因為取消後座椅,使得後行李廂空間擴增不少,若搭配可傾倒的後隔板,則創造更為寬敞的置物空間。

動力方面初期共有1.5L(1493cc)SOHC雙化油器直列四缸(105hp/12.8kgm五速手排)、1.5L(1493cc) SOHC雙化油器直列四缸(100hp/12.8kgm四速自排)、1.6L(1590cc) DOHC PGM-FI直列四缸(130hp/14.7kgm四速自排-五速手排)兩種排氣量與三種馬力設定,爾後又增加HONDA最引以為傲的VTEC可變氣門結構後,變成代號B16A的心臟,1.6L(1595cc)DOHC直列四缸VTEC引擎,可輸出160hp/15.5kgm功率,並與四速自排和五速手排組合。

由於車身重量僅940-1020kg,最小迴轉半徑也只有4.5-4.8m,加上前後雙A臂的底懸吊設計,因此CR-X在性能和操控性都獲得車主認同,也讓HONDA的品牌形象再度提升。隨後1991年在Civic邁入第五世代之際,CR-X也在1992年進行全新大改款。
