由於1990年代市場消費者口味越來越重,強調個性化的新世代族群陸續崛起,與方正造型逐漸被空氣力學的圓潤所取代,HONDA開始思考Civic的設計方向,同時還針對北美需求推出符合趨勢的雙門車。

於1991年9月推出的第五代Civic,HONDA稱之為Sport Civic,原因就是繼Grand Civic之後,所有性能車需要的元素在第五代車型上都已經具備,所以Sport Civic將是完全發揮的一個車型世代,當然在外觀造型上也更具動感。車身尺碼上,2570mm軸距創造出4070×1695×1350mm三門車型,另外針對雙門與四門車型,則賦予2620mm軸距,車身尺碼分別為4390×1695×1345mm、4395×1695×1375mm,三種車型在A柱之前造型可是完全相同,尾燈組也都共用,然而在局部重新詮釋下展現截然不同的風貌。

內裝方面無論三門掀背、雙門、四門車型,第五代Civic的最大特徵,在於中控台和排檔座採分離式結構,除了更為突出也增加腿部空間;另外頭枕固定式類桶型座椅可謂創新設計,對於年輕族群者相當新奇,但習慣傳統上下可調結構者就感到不便利,因此光頭枕就出現兩極化聲音。當然三門掀背所專屬的雙開式後尾廂門,則提供物品取放的便利,這在當時亦是一大話題。

動力部分雖然承襲第四代的1.3L(82hp)、1.5L(91hp)、1.6L(105hp)三具單化油器直列四缸SOHC引擎,但這些是因應預算型買家所設定,HONDA將1.5L(1493cc)與1.6L(1590cc)兩具直列四缸SOHC心臟換上PGM-FI噴射供油系統,故可獲得130hp/6800rpm馬力和14.1kgm/5200rpm(14.8kgm/5200rpm)扭力輸出,隨後化油器引擎全數取消,第五代Civic正式邁入噴射時代。不過最為人所津津樂道的,可是延續第四代SiR II的1.6L VTEC可變氣門DOHC引擎,初期僅有160hp/7300rpm、15.6kgm/6500rpm功率,隨後經調校後獲得170hp馬力,搭配上優異的前後雙A臂懸吊設計,成為1990年代前期全球最強的前驅三門掀背車。至於變速系統,共有五速手排和四速自排(附OD檔)兩種選擇。

正因為產品設計和定位轉變幅度大,且導入優異的新技術,使得第五代Civic成為Civic從誕生以來達成生產1000萬輛的推手,就在所有車迷正歡慶這個得來不易的成績,4個月後HONDA推出第六代Civic,市場反應遠低於第五代。
