搭載在NSX之上的3.5L VTEC引擎。
可變汽門正時技術在當前的引擎科技之中已不是什麼新奇的科技,但是在8-90年代,這項技術卻讓HONDA的引擎以高效率而聞名,並在全球車壇之中揚名立萬。

VTEC運作原理概要。
事實上,引擎的運作除了燃料的燃燒之外,吸入新鮮空氣與排出廢氣的效率與時間點也是相當重要的一環,正如同人們的呼吸一樣,在應對走路與跑步之時呼吸的頻率自然不同,因此為了讓引擎在各種狀態下都能達到最完美的輸出效果,進/排氣的方式也必須有相對應的改變才行,而這也正是VTEC技術的精神所在。

據傳,VTEC的發明人是再與友人前往居酒屋用餐時,看著廚師在爐火上轉著雞肉丸子時所啟發的靈感。初期的設計的基本概念是藉由控制進氣汽門的凸輪軸設有兩組不同角度的凸輪,並透過一個多段式搖臂來推動汽門,而此搖臂有二個油壓控制結構以達到多段移動或是整組移動的目的,藉此在引擎以低轉速運轉時,讓凸輪軸上較大角度凸輪對應的搖臂空轉,只讓較小角度的凸輪推動汽門。

而當轉速到達設定的臨界點時,油壓機構進行調整後讓較大角度的凸輪推動整個搖臂,而較小角度的凸輪則開始空轉,以達到兩段式控制汽門開啟與關閉的效果。

這樣的作法為的就要讓引擎在一般行車、以較低轉速時運作時有著較高扭力的發揮,並且享有較低的油耗,而在需要較大的動力輸出時,則配合較高的運轉速度而提供更多的空氣供給與高效率的排出,更貼和人類呼吸的狀況,讓引擎的運轉效率更為理想。


VTEC技術第一次被應用在量產車款之上,是1989年匹配在五代Civic Si R之上的B16A引擎,1.6L的排氣量在自然進氣的架構下可有170hp的最高輸出;而在1999年時所推出的S2000,更以2.0L自然進氣設定達到240hp的最大馬力輸出,都是至今仍為全球車迷們感到驚豔不以的典範佳作。

S2000的引擎在VTEC技術的應用下所達到高燃積效率,至今仍然難有其它的量產車款能夠超越。
