耽心NISSAN可能居於劣勢，據傳日本政府正推動HONDA與NISSAN合併

根據英國《金融時報》的報導，日本政府正試圖推動日產NISSAN和本田汽車HONDA合併的談判，因為日本官方擔心日產雷諾三菱聯盟（NISSAN-RENAULT-MITSUBISHI）可能面臨崩潰，而讓NISSAN日產汽車暴露在風暴之中。該報指稱去年年底，日本高層官員就已試圖促成有關合併的討論和談判，因為他們擔心日產和雷諾的關係惡化。
根據報導，日本首相安倍晉三的顧問擔心日產和雷諾的關係「嚴重惡化」，可能完全破裂，使日產汽車處於弱勢地位，因而提出建議，讓日產與本田合作，以加強兩個品牌競爭力。然而合併談判幾乎立刻就失敗了，因為日產和本田都拒絕了這個想法，因為新冠疫情大流行，迫使兩家公司將注意力集中在疫情防治上。而日產與本田車以及日本首相辦公室，都拒絕對這份報導發出評論。
雖然談判最終失敗的原因尚未得到證實，但很有可能是因為本田汽車獨特的工程設計，使它難以與日產共用零部件和平臺，這也意味著日產與本田的合併，將無法符合目前市場最重要的規模經濟。
合併的另一大障礙便是這兩個品牌的商業模式也大相徑庭，日產汽車的核心業務專注於汽車，而本田則是比較多樣性，其業務同時也涵蓋機車、電動工具和園藝設備等市場，而且本田在這些領域的市場整體業務中，扮演著重要角色。
然而近年來，愈來愈多的汽車製造廠聯合起來，試圖在日益惡化的全球市場中，鞏固自己的地位。去年，法國PSA集團就和FCA飛雅特克萊斯勒公司確認雙方的合併，將創造出全球第四大汽車製造商，也就是Stellantis。而最近福特和福斯終於敲定了一個廣泛性的全球聯盟，涉及兩家公司在電動車、皮卡、廂型車和自動駕駛技術開發合作。
