日本車廠HONDA本田在日前表示，完成了一項重大的創舉，那就是以旗下的氫燃料電池車FCX，搭載新開發的新一代燃料電池，進行位在北海道的低溫氣候行駛測試，並證明了其能夠在極低溫度下仍可正常行駛，發揮可靠的功用，對於燃料電池的科技成就，可說向前跨越了一大步。
這個新一代的燃料電池所使用的材料比過去少了將近一半，但是在於輸出效率上反而增加了快一倍，相對在體積與重量上也較過去更為精巧，原廠表示在耐用度上更為提昇，能量消耗的經濟性也進步了百分之十，比之上一代燃料電池可說進步了不少，而根據實驗時的結果顯示，其耐用溫度可在95度C到零下20度C之間，幾乎可以應付絕大多數的天候狀況。
實際的道路測試計劃所選擇的路線則是在北海道的一般道路，測試時的氣溫最低達零下11度C，FCX在惡劣的天候下仍可順利地運作，同時表現也相當優異，而這項實驗也驗證了HONDA研發的全新氫燃料電池確實可在低溫下發揮功效。而這組新的動力能源則可提供FCX輕燃料車107hp的馬力，極速為150km/h，續航力約288公里。
