為了環保，HONDA、YAMAHA強化電動機車開發

全球汽機車所排放的廢氣，可算是破壞地球環境的元凶，尤其數量驚人的機車，雖然大舉改為更環保的四行程引擎，甚至還導入電子噴射技術，然而依然會造成污染，因此電動機車就成為足以改善節能問題的一大方向，像世界最大機車廠商日本HONDA，與佔有率前三大的YAMAHA，將積極投入電動機車的研發，以減緩污染對地球生態的威脅。
因污染讓南極臭氧層破洞越來越大，進而影響生態環境改變，再加上能源問題浮上檯面，使地球上的生物面臨空前的大自然浩劫，為了挽救這樣的現象，日本HONDA與YAMAHA紛紛針對旗下的二輪機車做產品上調整，除了開發更為環保省油並符合各國嚴苛標準的汽油噴射引擎，更針對電動馬達與專用鋰氫電池做研發，以提升電動機車的續航力，性能則與汽油機車並駕齊驅。
根據HONDA社長福井威夫表示，現在以輕型車為基礎的電動車普遍被車廠視為未來發展方向，然而汽車體積大，重量也比機車更重，單就電池組的輸出功率與容量就必須更大，反觀機車因體積小重量輕，對於電池與驅動馬達的要求度沒有像汽車這麼高，因此接下來將會以開發電動速克達為優先考量。而YAMAHA社長尾川隆則認為，YAMAHA向來會以開發電動機車為前提，尤其在能源短缺環保意識高漲的年代，電動機車自然有其優勢。
對HONDA和YAMAHA而言，電動機車的大量生產已經刻不容緩，一如NISSAN、MITSUBISHI、SUBARU等車廠，皆陸續與不少電池廠商展開合作，共同研發適合汽車用的電池組，就機車業者的角度，這個問題所需要的投資金額就相對低很多，不過電動機車在未來必會成為一大趨勢。
