在過去幾年，TOYOTA靠著一台Prius油電複合式車款，為自己在節能車的領域中，奠定不可取代的地位。這樣的權威，更反應在實際的銷售數字上，預計在2007年銷售量就突破280,000輛的大關。
另外，不單只有TOYOTA Prius，其他林林總總的hybrid車款加起來，TOYOTA和LEXUS今年就會有超過430,000輛的hybrid新車駛上街頭。截至今日，TOYOTA已成功的將100萬輛hybrid車帶入主流市場。但目前仍然有許都需要克服的難題，像是hybrid車昂貴的價格，就是首先需要解決的問題。
另外車款選擇不夠多樣化、鋰電池技術不夠純熟，也是需要克服的問題。現在，TOYOTA胸懷撞志的指出，可望在三年之內解決上述的問題，是否真能成功，其實單就Prius受歡迎的程度，TOYOTA這次誇下海口，也讓人不免心存期待。
由於TOYOTA有信心大幅降低hybrid油電車的成本，因此表示在2010年hybrid車的銷售量就可與汽油車不相上下。到了2020年，TOYOTA旗下所有的車款都將配有hybrid油電系統。
