    展翼高飛實現夢想,HONDA名揚車壇61載(4)

第一代Civic
由於HONDA 1300在市場上失敗,一時之間退出四輪領域的傳言四起,但一切謠言都在Civic的出現後打破。先前所堅持的空冷引擎,在最後妥協決定推出符合大眾的水冷引擎,1971年HONDA首部水冷引擎車款為N360的姊妹車Life,動力與靜肅性都有明顯進步,當然市場反應也大於HONDA 1300,這一切必須歸功於HONDA的技術本位。

第一代Accord
而真正讓HONDA嚐到勝利滋味的車款,就非Civic莫屬。此車雖在1972年問世,但時空背景卻回到能源危機醞釀期,HONDA為了落實「My Maxima、Mega Minimum」理念,來符合汽車需求處於高度成長的日本市場,遂推出2 Boxes FF Civic,頂著高經濟性與舒適空間的賣點,的確在世界車壇上造成話題,尤其採用先進省油低污染的CVCC(Compound Vortex Controlled Combustion)引擎,更在北美市場大獲好評。

有鑑於此,TOYOTA、FORD、CHRYSLER、ISUZU都分別向HONDA提出合作需求,希望能將CVCC引擎技術傾囊相授,而本田宗一郎對於機械夢想的前提,順利和這些大廠合作,也連帶提升HONDA整體品牌企業形象和地位,從二輪HONDA變成技術HONDA;1976年Civic在四年內達成100萬輛目標,成為原廠最會下蛋的金母雞,並開始著力於四輪車領域的開發。同時,為了因應日本國土省交通部的政策,HONDA也參與ESV安全實驗車的開發計畫,這也是日後HONDA諸多汽車安全的源頭。

在Civic成功後,HONDA又推出更高級的Accord,結果也一舉獲得市場前所未有的回應,從此HONDA在四輪市場無須再背負機車名聲的包袱,1978年美國本田累計生產突破500萬輛,並和英國BL大英LEYLAND合作,推出許多膾炙人口的車款,奠定邁向世界戰略的穩固根基。

為了提升整體品牌,並和HONDA等於國民車作區隔,遂在1985年於加拿大發表新的乘用車品牌ACURA,在北美市場展開雙品牌制度,這也讓NISSAN、TOYOTA紛紛仿效。
