VTEC（Variable Valve Timing and Value Life Electric Control System），這種開可變氣門正時系統先驅的技術，可是HONDA相當引以為傲的獨門絕技，藉由電子控制、引擎轉速所做出的氣門揚程與正時的動做，來達到提升燃燒效率和功率輸出，這可是汽車動力科技的一大突破，但你知道這種概念來自什麼地方嗎？答案竟然是居酒屋的串燒檯！
日本人向來喜歡在下班後小酌，物美價廉的居酒屋就成為最佳場所，喝著酒吃串燒，一趟下來可是「酒足飯飽」，此乃人生一大樂事，當然本田技研的員工也是如此。不過在居酒屋裡，這群頂著動力工學技術的人卻發明了一項影響日後汽車動力結構，也就是眾所皆知的VTEC可變氣門正時系統，當然不是喝得醉醺醺才突發奇想，而是從居酒屋老闆烤串燒時得來的靈感。
話說80年代正當全球經歷石油危機，各車廠都在為了動力油耗尋求解決之道，日本本田技研的工程師則以開發能改變氣門開啟時辰與角度為前提，卻苦無滿意的方案，所以如往常一群人下班後前往居酒屋洩壓，正當喝著酒看著老闆在燒烤檯烤串燒時，卻發現當一串串燒烤擺在佈滿木炭的燒烤檯上時，底下的木炭稍得相當旺，當翻面的瞬間火苗稍微變小些，且當串燒移動時底下的火苗多有變化，這下可吸引這群工程師的眼光，便在居酒屋看老闆表演，第二天馬上提出方案，VTEC在1988年就這樣被發明出來。
所以一串串的燒烤可影響整個汽車動力發展，看來那家居酒屋的老闆真要向HONDA收取高額的智慧財產，沒有串燒哪來的VTEC啊！
