S500與T360的成功，讓本田宗一郎嚐到勝利的滋味，也替HONDA步入四輪汽車領域交出漂亮的成績單，但身上充滿速度與機油的本田宗一郎，卻極度希望能在賽場上成為橫跨機車與汽車的公司，既然在機車賽事打出名號，何不利用S500將HONDA與賽車劃上等號，因此在1963年8月，S500的前哨戰就是參加歐洲三大越野賽。
於比利時起跑、全部賽程長達6000公里的越野賽事，就連比利時王子都親身參賽，本田宗一郎在藤澤武夫的建議下，派出古我信生與擔任副駕駛的鈴木義一參加比賽，這可是HONDA四輪汽車頭一回在國際型賽事中現身，當然本田宗一郎趁著到歐洲出差時，也前往當地向所有工作人員及車手打氣。
HONDA以S500當作比賽車，自然是最好的宣傳手法，然而不幸的事情卻發生在HONDA四輪初戰中，就在比賽開始的第二天， S500在南斯拉夫路段時不幸發生翻車意外，副駕駛鈴木義一的胸部受到重擊導致肺部出血，在送醫後依然難以挽回31歲的生命，發生這樣的意外讓本田宗一郎心情非常差，尤其鈴木義一又是他所培養的人才，因此本田宗一郎對所有人說無論如何也要讓鈴木義一回到日本。
在當時南斯拉夫仍是共產國家，鈴木義一的遺體想回日本可是困難重重，因此本田宗一郎透過日本外交部門的斡旋，順利讓鈴木義一安抵國門，並替他舉辦相當盛大的葬禮，雖然如此不幸的事情發生在HONDA第一場賽事裡，但本田宗一郎卻要所有員工打起精神，化悲憤為力量，盡全力讓HONDA在四輪賽車領域提高知名度，以慰鈴木義一在天之靈。
第一屆日本GP賽車在1962年舉辦，此時HONDA的汽車事業尚未開始。1963年10月S500正式販售，隨後在1964年3月又發表性能更好的S600，雖然這是一款小型敞篷跑車，卻充滿HONDA的結晶與科技。所以當1964年於鈴鹿所舉辦的第二屆日本賽車中，HONDA決定以S600參加GP1 Class級距，並由HONDA第一位F1車手Roni Bugna獲得優勝，第二名為北野元，第三名則是在1959年以日本四缸機車CR160奪得淺間火山賽事的島琪貞夫拿下，HONDA一口氣包辦前三名，S600的名氣在當時真是大過天，這也成為最佳的宣傳工具。
雖然受到當時日本特振法約束，S600只有現在輕型車的尺碼，馬力也僅有57hp，但卻能在賽道上展現出如此高的實力，除了本田宗一郎對機械的堅持，也讓世人更明白HONDA的功力。
