    HONDA與ROVER結緣只為MINI?

在日本所有車廠中,本田宗一郎所創立的HONDA算是最特立獨行,除了是有名的獨行俠,也鮮少和其他車廠合作,而早在1979年HONDA與擁有JAGUAR、ROVER、MINI、MG等品牌的英國BL合作,其最終目的只有一個,就是拿下最具潛力的MINI,然而這一切都在1994年BMW入主後破局。

AUSTIN Mini
以「空間極大化、機械極小化」為最高指導原則的HONDA,創造出舉世聞名的Civic、Accord、CR-V等車款,其中創業乘用車之作N360,更師承英國AUSTIN Mini,以前置引擎、前輪驅動、約3m長度和提供寬敞空間等特色,讓N360於問世後短短幾個月就榮登日本暢銷車寶座。正因為如此,就在HONDA搭著能源危機順風車後開始有了雄心壯志,以進軍全球為首要目標,所以於美國設廠後,更將目標鎖定在歐洲,對本田宗一郎而言若能和英國BL合作,且能從中學習更多的技術,就HONDA未來發展絕對有更大幫助。

所以雙方在1979年正式展開合作,HONDA釋出善意陸續將Civic、Accord、Legend等車款「借給」ROVER使用,並提供許多技術資源,BL也大方地提供LAND ROVER Discovery掛上HONDA廠徽,以Crossroad之名在日本販售,當然HONDA百般釋好,終極目標就在於拿下MINI,甚至成為挽救ROVER集團經營危機的救世主。

原本HONDA和ROVER本可過著神仙眷侶般的生活,HONDA甚至極有可能將ROVER併入旗下,且順利取得MINI、LAND ROVER的經營權,孰料BMW以程咬金之姿半路殺出,在條件更懮與種族情節的作祟下,以致於HONDA和ROVER於1994年正式分手,結果HONDA成為車壇少見的獨行俠,本田宗一郎的英國夢至今仍無法實現。
