發生在今年年初的日本東北賑災，奪去了許多寶貴的生命也造成難以統計的財產損失。許多災區現場仍是一片狼籍，被日本人戲稱為第三次核爆的福島核能電廠至今也杳無人煙。有鑑於此，地方政府機構投入了大量的作業機器人，而HONDA也將把尖端的ASIMO技術分享給需要的相關單位。
HONDA自2000年就開始投入ASIMO自動機械技術的研發，除了較知名的人形機器人之外，許多機械義肢、工廠機具等也導入了ASIMO的控制系統。HONDA也試著在福島核災的同時緊急開發4組ASIMO作業機器人給東京電力公司，無奈因不熟知地形情勢導致英雄無用武之地。
HONDA本次將與關東的救災單位以及東京電力合作開發，災難現場專用的機器人。以HONDA自行開發的ASIMO機械手臂為例，外觀採用全鋁合金材質的設計經過精密的切銷之後再施以陽極硬電鍍，內部關節及啟動齒輪也都經過特殊處理，在充滿高溫、高腐食性等惡劣環境下也不成問題。機械手臂內部也設置了猶如人體神經脈絡般的感應器，可由遠端接受操作者的訊號進行動作。每一處獨立關節都作了精密的設計，皆可完成270°以上的迴轉動作。
東京電力公司目前也就ASIMO機械手臂為原型進行開發，近日內將會至福島核能電廠進行測試。東北的救災單位也陸續與各地大學的研究實驗室進行ASIMO系統的教學與開發課程。而HONDA也將在東京車展現場展出最新的ASIMO技術。
