眼看著TOYOTA 86以及SUBAUR BRZ在世界各地熱銷，讓以開發高性能引擎見長的HONDA實在覺得不是滋味。因此現階段有消息指出，HONDA有意重新將在2009年宣告停產的S2000再度復出車壇，讓它藉由優異的車身配重以及充滿樂趣的底盤設定，為HONDA也能掀起一陣S2000的熱潮，絲毫不讓86、BRZ等車款專美於前。
只是任哪家車廠都沒想到，當2008年金融危機來時，不僅嚴重衝擊當時的汽車市場，甚至連部分下一代車型都需要進一步研討設計，導致許多性能車款後續開發終止，甚至永遠冷凍。而TOYOTA卻因為電影因素與SUBAUR共同催生後驅小跑車意外造成熱銷，連NISSAN都在研擬將旗下停產多年「S」後驅車系重啟研發，迫使HONDA這塵封已久的S2000後續車款有了一絲希望。事實上，即使停產多年S2000的熱度依然未減，其二手車價居高不下的情況也說明了玩家對於本車的高度肯定。
根據HONDA的一份報告聲明指出，原廠正考慮計畫開發風靡一時的後驅跑車S2000後繼車，並最快在2012年秋天以概念車之姿亮相，隔年量產車型拍板定案。這完全是給了HONDA迷一劑強心針，因為從去年311日本大地震開始直到泰國水災，嚴重影響HONDA產能，回復之後更要穩定基本車款的製造速度，因此像S2000這類的後驅車款勢必會被耽擱一旁暫緩研發。
而S2000後續車在外型上應會採用2008年HONDA所推出的OSM（Open Study Model）為基礎，並加以修飾以符合現代設計元素，車身尺碼也會比現行的4135×1750×285mm 略為縮小。此外在動力配置上也會改採更節能環保的Hybrid油電複合動力系統，若HONDA的新旗艦跑車NSX能在2014年量產，那S2000的後車款也將會更快現身。
