賽車不只是汽車產業的起點、更是背後無形的推手，儘管投入賽車運動需要相當資源，但卻是汽車技術進步的先驅。而成立於1993年、隸屬於HONDA北美賽車公司的性能開發部門（Honda Performance Development, Inc.），正是專門負責HONDA/ACURA兩大品牌參與賽車比賽的幕後功臣，同時也是讓「本田魂」揚威國際的重要指標。

總部設在美國加州Santa Clarita的HPD，擁有一座占地12.3萬平方英尺的開發中心，專司工廠賽車的設計，包含引擎、底盤以及空力套件幾乎都由HPD負責，目前也發展出市售的改裝套件。

HONDA對於賽車運動的推廣，也讓HPD參與相當多國際賽事，像是IndyCar系列、Le Mans系列、WEC世界耐力錦標賽、Super GT、MotoGP，甚至連最為入門的卡丁車比賽，都能看到HPD的身影，而且成績也是有目共睹。

HPD的成立不只是象徵著品牌對於賽事的熱忱，同時也是過去無數賽車經驗的累積。細數HONDA的賽車歷史，其實就跟品牌創立的時間（1948年）相差不遠。

HONDA於1959年首次參加英國曼島TT摩托車賽，第三年便在此賽事囊括125cc、250cc雙料車廠冠軍，在二輪賽事的揚威國際，也讓剛踏入汽車領域的HONDA興起挑戰四輪賽車的念頭，便在1964年參加最高層級的F1，僅花了11場的F1比賽，立刻在1965年獲得首勝，打響了HONDA世界級的製車實力。

儘管1968年退出了F1賽事，但全世界各層級賽事依舊可以看到HONDA的戰駒穿梭賽道，同時在1993年成立HPD之後，參與的賽事更加廣泛之外，也成為許多賽事的引擎供應商，顯見HONDA的技術深受國際肯定，而久違F1許久的HONDA日前也已經確定將在2015年重返F1賽事，看來這就是當前HPD最大的任務了。
