以輕型車Life為基礎於1998年10月誕生的Z，雖然承襲四分之一世紀前的車名，但嶄新的Z無論造型、定位乃至科技可是完全不同，因為第二代Z是HONDA為了與SUZUKI Jimny對抗所推出的輕型SUV，然而卻因銷售和預期以極大落差，最終僅以三年壽命草草收場。
隨著第三代Life於1998年登場，HONDA在同一年推出嶄新世代的Z，定位上是走都會輕型SUV路線，機械結構與底盤、動力都與Life共用，擁有2360mm軸距和3395×1475×1675mm車身尺碼，在車門兩道明顯折線幫助下營造出越野風格。內裝以簡單卻便利為訴求，衛星導航列為選配，空間也能提供四名乘員與後方行李置物使用，同時也可藉由後座椅背前翻功能，創造更為多變的空間運用。
既然是輕型車，那麼在日本的法規下引擎排氣量自然限定在660cc以內，因此Z的心臟為代號EO7Z的656cc直列三缸SOHC 12氣門電子噴射供油設定，共有自然進氣和附中冷器渦輪增壓兩種選擇，前者具有52hp/7000rpm、6.1kgm/4000rpm輸出功率，後者則能發揮64hp/6000rpm馬力和9.5kgm/3700rpm扭力，兩者均和四速自排、4WD系統組合。前麥弗遜/後拖曳臂懸吊、4.6m最小迴轉半徑、195mm最低離地高度、前碟後鼓煞車、175/80R15輪胎等，也都讓Z的靈活、操控、便利、安全獲得肯定。
雖然擁有不錯的產品力，機能性和操控性均有優異表現，然而生不逢時的Z卻飽受銷售低迷之苦，主要是歷經泡沫經濟民眾對於樂趣的需求遠低於實用，使得Z在市場上三年後於2002年全面停產。
