以發動機起家的HONDA，算是日本最晚進入四輪事業的廠商，雖然1963年的小跑車S500深受好評，但這卻非大眾車，因此在1967年推出N360，結果讓HONDA從此在四輪工業立足。
1967年以當時幣值313000日圓低價問市的N360，是HONDA創立以來第一款大眾乘用車，在短短數月間銷售長紅，並一舉拉下60年代銷售冠軍車款SUBARU 360，成為日本輕型車的新盟主，最主要除了寬敞的空間外，強調性能的動力也是一大賣點。
在50-60年代的日本輕型車，多採用二行程雙缸引擎，但HONDA卻一掃這種設計，改以四行程雙缸SOHC變成N360的心臟，這也是日本第一款搭載這種引擎的車款。
排氣量為354cc的N360，使用一具直四空冷雙缸SOHC四行程引擎，最大輸出功率為31hp/8500rpm、3.0kgm/5500rpm，配上四速手排和475公斤的車身，擁有115km/h的極速，在當時已經突破輕型車格局，因此獲的消費者青睞。而2995×1295×1345mm的車身和長達2000mm軸距，車身雖小但內部空間卻非常寬敞，足以輕易容納四名乘員，這也符合日本的家庭結構，因此購買此車者多為小家庭。
1968年為了輸出至歐洲市場，還推出排氣量更大、功率輸出更強的N600，車體尺寸也相對長大；1971年全面停產的N360，等於是替日後世界車Civic鋪路，而如果沒有N360，或許HONDA永遠也無法進軍大眾乘用車領域。
