雖然HONDA在1963年以S500踏入四輪領域，並於1967年推出N360，但真正晉升為真正乘用車的產品，非1969年誕生的1300莫屬，無論在尺碼、動力上，若1300沒有奠定根基，那就沒有今天的HONDA了。
在一片以前置引擎後輪驅動為主流的汽車市場，HONDA卻反其道而行，改以前輪驅動為產品特性，這也奠定HONDA接下來的造車工藝，3885×1465×1345mm的HONDA 1300就是前鋒。1969年HONDA 1300誕生，初期僅有四門型態，然而不受消費市場認同遂於1970年追加雙門型態，四門車型逐漸退出產品線。
77系列的大膽的方形頭燈設計，與當時流行的四圓燈截然不同，光這點也可看出HONDA的堅持與決心，大型雙獨立水箱護罩、砲彈型後視鏡、掀背流線的身影，讓HONDA 1300 77系列獲得年輕人的喜愛。
而動力上，則採用HONDA最擅長的高轉速調校技術，1298cc空冷直四SOHC引擎，並加諸更複雜的強制空冷技術，讓引擎運轉更有效率，因此獲得100hp/7200rpm的馬力與10.95kgm/4500rpm扭力，在四速手排的幫助下，車重885公斤的HONDA 1300具有175km/h的極速實力。
同時，HONDA 1300也推出99 S系列，與99系列最大差異，在於使用圓燈設計，其他結構與配備完全相同，不過動力心臟經調校後，功率輸出達115hp/12.05kgm，因此能有185km/h的極速。不過77系列僅在市場上一年就消失。
1974年HONDA 1300全面停產，因為新車型Civic的問世取代了既有地位，而HONDA 1300在原廠的階段性任務也完成。如果沒有HONDA 1300，今天的本田技研可能在汽車領域就沒有傲人成就。
