「City~HONDA、HONDA、HONDA、HONDA」，這種廣告歌曲相信只有80年代的日本人才清楚，因為這是英國音樂團體替HONDA City所代言的廣告主題曲，單是1982年就創下11萬輛的驚人成績。
專替20-30歲、平均年齡27歲年輕世代所開發的City，是HONDA風靡80年代的都會個性化小型車，外型方正卻不失可愛的第一代City，可算是曾導入台灣國產化車型的祖宗，以3380×1570×1470mm的車體配合2220mm的軸距，可輕鬆提供五名成人不錯的乘坐空間，堪稱高頂的車室設計，頗有微型Minivan的設計概念。
由於鎖定年輕族群，故1981年11月推出之際只有三門自然進氣一種車型，所搭載的引擎為一具1231cc直四CVCC SOHC單化油器引擎，最大輸出功率為63-67hp/5000rpm、10.0kgm/3000rpm，並提供三速自排與五速手排兩種變速系統，而City還有一大賣點，就是行李廂可擺入一台MotoCompo折疊式50cc機車，以強調都會使用的便利性。
隨後在1982年7月追加Type R車型，這並不是以性能取向的小鋼砲，而是天窗版，同一年則因應性能迷需求，追加渦輪增壓版本，同一具心臟在渦輪增壓的加持下，輸出功率一舉提升至110hp/5500rpm、16.3kgm/3000rpm，五速手排變速系統為單一選擇。1983年以Turbo II車體為基礎，經過義大利設計大師賓尼法利納工作室的巧手，搖身一變成為敞篷車型。
1986年，第一代City功成身退，同一年則由有小Civic之稱的第二代上陣，但銷售成績卻不若第一代來得強，因此於1994年停產，直到2001年才由Fit補位。
