為了填補Civic與Accord空缺，HONDA於1980年推出Quint車型，爾後在1985年變成Quint Integra，是以家庭訴求為考量，然而將Integra從Quint車系獨立出來，則是1989年的事情了。
原本在HONDA的規劃中，Quint Integra共有三門掀背、五門掀背與四門房車三種型態，然而在1989年第三代車型裡，卻將最不受歡迎的五門掀背車型取消，僅保留四門和三門兩種造型，而冠上Quint名稱的Integra，似乎無法突顯跑車個性化的定位，HONDA為了作出區隔，決定讓Integra從整個產品線中獨立出來，並捨棄Quint車型，當然另一個主因，是Integra掛上ACURA品牌後在北美大受歡迎，為了延續知名度，原廠才做出這樣的決定。
外型俊美的第三代Integra，三門掀背車身尺碼為4390×1695×1325mm，四門則為4480×1695×1340mm，軸距則前者為2550mm，後者為2600mm，也因此分別造就不同的最大迴轉半徑：5.0和5.1公尺。無窗框車門為Integra最大特徵（四門車型前後均無窗框），這種類似跑車化的設計，更加突顯Integra的個性；而一反傳統霧燈置於前保險桿上的設計，第三代Integra將霧燈與車頭燈組整合。
動力上，第三代Integra共有三種排氣量的VTEC引擎，分別為B16A 1595cc直四DOHC（160hp/7600rpm、15.5kgm/7000rpm）、ZC 1590cc直四SOHC（120hp/6300rpm、14.5kgm/5500rpm）、DB1 1834cc直四DOHC（130hp/6300rpm、16.5kgm/4000rpm）三種設定，五速手排和四速自排可依需求做選擇，而底盤懸吊更從前麥弗遜、後拖曳臂提升為四輪雙A臂，因此在操控與舒適性均有所提升。而內裝上以跑車化為主，兩張桶型座椅更是受到矚目。
也由於Integra的成功，讓HONDA在1993年再推第四代車型，結果卻因為四圓燈造型太過可愛，故又逼得在小改款時將頭燈組改回長條狀。
