在HONDA的戰略中，Civic與Accord可是擄獲全球消費者購買慾的重要車款，尤其在Civic推出成功後，讓原廠對房車的開發更具信心，因此在1976年開發出Accord，而初期只有三門掀背一種型態，四門與五門車型則隔年的事情。
基本上第一代Accord等於是Civic的放大版，因為仍屬於三門掀背造型設計，但尺寸放大至4125×1620×1340mm，並增加軸距至2380mm後，乘坐舒適性和氣派度亦大舉提升，然而對HONDA和消費者而言，掀背車永遠不及四門來得豪華，因此在1977年追加四門和五門掀背兩種車款，以符合市場需求。
其實在競爭的年代，HONDA Accord的確有許多傲人創舉，如速度感應式動力方向盤、CVCC高效率引擎、輕量化車體結構、強調操控大於舒適的設計等，而這一切也都遵循本田宗一郎的夢想前進，所以在推出之際，確實獲得市場不小的迴響，尤其是三門掀背更深受年輕族群喜愛。
動力方面共有直四SOHC 1599cc、1750cc兩種排氣量，而當時所開發的CVCC與單化油器的組合也是動力心臟要素，因此兩者的最大輸出功率分別為80hp/12.3kgm、90hp/13.5kgm，除了五速手排變速系統外，還有一具便利掛帥的兩速自排系統。1979年，則將自排變速系統作升級，改成附有OD檔的三速設定。
1981年掀背與四門Accord都進入大改款週期，從此Accord也等同於HONDA的代表作，當然也奠定日後立足全球的遠大夢想。
