在70年代HONDA雖然有著Accord撐腰，但產品陣容依舊缺乏中型級距房車，因此原廠藉由第二代Accord的上市，也推出一款名為Vigor房車，地位當然是在Accord之上。
以英文「活力」為車名的Vigor首度於1981年問世，與第二代Accord之間的關係非常密切，除了因保險桿造型造成車身尺寸有差異外，共用2450mm軸距的底盤，進而衍生出較Accord高一級的房車。除了身材為4455×1665×1375mm的Vigor四門房車，還有當時所流行的雙門掀背版，尺寸向下修正後為4255×1665×1355mm，由於水箱護罩、頭燈組、前後保險桿均與Accord有點不同，因此散發出更為成熟洗鍊的風格。
內裝鋪陳則完全和Accord相同，方正的中控台佈局，四輻式方向盤、絨布或皮革座椅，甚至電動窗都成為標準配備，這也看得出HONDA有意朝豪華路線的決心；而拜不算短的軸距所賜，倒也能容納五名成人乘坐。
基於70年代HONDA將CVCC列為動力新武器，Vigor當然也擁有這項科技，初期共有直四SOHC 12氣門1.6（90hp）與1.8升（110hp）兩具引擎，其中1.8升具備CVCC-II，除了五速手排變速系統外還能選擇三速自排。1982年11月更追加四速手排，1983年則進行小改款，將後視鏡從前葉子板移到側窗旁邊。此外，1984年增加一款新技術引擎-PGM-FI電子噴射，1.8升引擎的輸出功率旋即增為130hp/17.0kgm。
由於Vigor在日本市場創下不錯的口碑，所以藉由Accord於1985年大改款之際，Vigor也進入第二代。
