自從Life與Z在1974年於日本停產後，HONDA就未曾再踏入輕型車市場，直到1985年九月，HONDA推出全新Today後，才開啟日後在輕型車領域的大門。
有著「Tall Boy」暱稱的Today，宛如縮小版的City，最主要是兩個碩大的圓型頭燈太過搶眼，且高車頂的設計可是當時日本輕型車首創，這種類似RV的概念也影響日後輕型車的發展路線。雖然Today的身材為3195×1395×1315mm，2330mm的軸距僅能容納四名乘員，但1315mm的高度可是當時同級車最低，且低底盤設計有助於乘員上下車的便利性。另外原廠還推出Type G，內部空間只有兩張座椅，後方則規劃成置物空間，可算是輕型商用車的先驅。
動力上初期只有一具直二SOHC單化油器545cc引擎，最大輸出馬力與扭力分別是31hp/5500rpm、4.4kgm/4000rpm，並與四速手排與兩速組合，爾後提升為直三SOHC的12氣門噴射引擎，功率增加為42hp/8000rpm、4.6kgm/4500rpm，且還增加三速HONDA Matic自排給車主選擇。至於底盤懸吊，仍為前麥弗遜、後拖曳臂結構。
1988年二月進行小改款，原本的可愛圓燈被長條狀給取代，同時也修改前保險桿氣壩、輪圈、車身飾條造型，且為了提升戰力，更增添罕見的電動天窗，而內裝鋪陳也變得更為成熟。直到1993年，第一代Today任務終了，後繼者仍稱為Today，並擁有更現代感的造型和動力配置。
