在第一代CR-V誕生之前，HONDA完全沒有設計與製造SUV的經驗，雖說在產品陣容中曾出現過Jazz、Horizon與Crossroad三款SUV，但前兩款車來自日本ISUZU（分別為Mu、Bighorn），後者則是英國LAND ROVER的傑作，正因為有了如此的經驗，也加速HONDA進入SUV領域的腳步；其中Crossroad更奠定HONDA日後能創造LSUV的功力。
早在1980年代日本HONDA曾與英國ROVER有過合作，雙方各推代表補足產品上的缺憾，像Civic與400系列、Accord與600系列、Legend與800系列，嚴格來說就是雙生兄弟車，只不過在裝飾與動力上作區隔化，當然延續這樣的親密關係，ROVER在1993年送給HONDA一個大禮，就是讓HONDA將廠徽掛在Discovery上，並命名為Crossroad在日本販售。
車身造型共有三門五座與五門七座的Crossroad，在2540mm軸距下創造出4465×1800×1952mm、4535×1800×1952mm兩種車身尺碼，除了車頭水箱護罩、205/16鋁合金輪圈、車尾備胎蓋、車室方向盤上的廠徽換成”H”外，其他鋪陳與設計都完全與Discovery相同。動力上無論是三門還是五門車型，均配置一具來自英國ROVER集團的3947cc V8 OHV噴射引擎，最大馬力與扭力分別是180hp/4750rpm、31.8kgm/3100rpm，並和四速自排及加力箱組合搭配。當然Crossroad承襲Discovery的強大四輪驅動系統，獲得傑出的越野能力。
HONDA在獲得ROVER核心技術，並在ISUZU大力幫忙下，終於有了四輪驅動系統和SUV的設計能力，因此在1995年推出膾炙人口橫掃都會SUV的力作-第一代CR-V；至於Crossroad則在1997年合約終止後消失。
